Tree Fruit Program
(apples, pears, and stone fruit)

This program is coordinated by Michael Fargione. Educational efforts focus on integrating fruit production and management. Topics covered include:
  • Insect, disease and weed management
  • Application of crop protectants
  • Planting systems
  • Tree pruning and training
  • Plant nutrition and soil management
  • Tree growth and crop load management
  • Variety selection
  • Apple and pear maturity evaluations
  • Harvest and storage recommendations

Timely alert messages are provided by calling (845) 691-7173, or HVRFP members can receive them as direct e-mail messages. Alerts cover tree fruit pest and disease management, cultural practices and related news. Members can contact M. Fargione to be placed on the e-mail message list.

Tree Fruit Maturity Reports
Weekly fax or e-mail reports during the fall provide evaluations of apple and pear maturity, harvest and storage recommendations. Available to HVRFP members only. Members can contact M. Fargione to receive these reports. Click here for details on the Maturity Program.

Hudson Valley Scouting Report - Insect Trap Data & Degree Day ModelingScouting Reports
Tree Fruit site specific locations with degree day predictions and insect trap data include at this time: Highland, NY. This program is coordinated by Peter Jentsch, Extension Associate of Entomology for Cornell's Hudson Valley Laboratory. Click here for Scouting Reports

Annual Events
Commercial Fruit Grower's School
A 2-day educational meeting and mini-trade show held each year in February. Diverse topics on tree fruit production and marketing issues are covered with major emphasis on apple production

Stone Fruit School
An educational workshop held in March to provide information on peach, nectarine, plum, cherry and apricot production.

Post Bloom-Thinning Meetings
On-site grower meetings held in commercial orchards during early May to review current season pest management and crop load conditions.

Pruning Demonstrations
Winter and summer field workshops where proper pruning and training techniques are demonstrated.

Post-harvest Workshops
A workshop is held each August to update growers on current season harvest conditions and the latest postharvest storage recommendations. Workshop locations alternate annually between Ithaca, NY and the Hudson Valley. The 2003 meeting will be held in Ithaca.
